Microsoft Selling Server Software Online
Microsoft has recently launched an online store. Although this isn’t incredibly surprising, it is interesting. This is particularly true if you are a Microsoft partner or distributor.
CRN.com has this to say:
“Windows Server 2008 and System Center Essentials are the only products currently listed in the Business section of Microsoft’s Online Store, but on the purchasing options Web page for Small Business Server, Microsoft indicates that Small Business Server will be available for online purchase sometime in the future. “
The article goes on to explain that partners are expressing a growing level of concern as Microsoft adds more and more products to the online store.
Having been personally dealt with Microsoft licensing, I can honestly say it isn’t always a direct sale opportunity. The licensing schemes and server dependencies will require some form of consulting if you are deploying anything beyond a single server.
